How This Works
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). WHO categories: Under 18.5 = underweight. 18.5–24.9 = healthy weight. 25–29.9 = overweight. 30–34.9 = obese class I. 35+ = obese class II/III. For people of South Asian, Chinese or Black African ethnic backgrounds, health risks may occur at lower BMI thresholds (overweight: BMI 23+, obese: BMI 27.5+).
BMI is a useful population screening tool but has significant limitations for individuals. It cannot distinguish muscle from fat — a muscular athlete can have an "obese" BMI while being perfectly healthy. It doesn't account for where fat is stored (visceral fat around the abdomen is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat). A better measure for most adults is waist circumference: above 88cm (women) or 102cm (men) indicates increased health risk regardless of BMI.
