How This Works

Alcohol units = volume (ml) × ABV% ÷ 1000. One UK unit = 10ml of pure alcohol. Calorie calculation: alcohol contains 7 kcal/g, plus sugary mixers add additional calories. A standard 175ml glass of 13% wine = 175 × 0.13 = 2.275 units and approximately 160 calories (including the alcohol's calorific contribution).

The NHS recommends no more than 14 units per week for both men and women — and to spread drinking over 3 or more days with several alcohol-free days. 14 units is equivalent to 6 pints of 4% beer or 10 small (125ml) glasses of 13% wine. There is no truly "safe" level of alcohol, but keeping within 14 units per week significantly reduces health risks. Drinking above this level consistently raises risk of liver disease, certain cancers and cardiovascular problems.
